September 8, 2008   Who is Guru Fatha Singh?

Guru Fatha Singh Khalsa was born in Thunder Bay and grew up near Kingston, Ontario.  At an early age, his inquiring mind probed the large questions of life and death, leading him to consume the entire philosophy section of the public library.  At sixteen, he left his home to join the peace movement inspiring the hearts of millions of his generation at that time.

In Vancouver, Guru Fatha Singh learned the gentle art of meditation from Swami Janardan Paramahansa of the Ajapa Breath Foundation.  He also began the practice of Hatha Yoga with students of Swami Satchidananda and the Integral Yoga Institute.

At seventeen, Guru Fatha Singh took his first Kundalini Yoga class in Toronto.  Eight months later, he moved into the Guru Ram Das Ashram community and began practicing early morning yoga and meditation, and teaching weekly classes.  Guru Fatha Singh met Yogi Bhajan, master of Kundalini Yoga and spiritual director of the 3HO Foundation, later that year.  Soon after, he received from him his new spiritual name and began his decades-long tutelage under the master's expert eye.

Guru Fatha Singh never lost his passion for larger issues of peace and social justice.  Ordained as a minister of the Sikh faith in 1987, Guru Fatha Singh became a chaplain at the University of Toronto in 2000.  In 2002, Guru Fatha Singh founded Peace Week, a yearly forum and celebration dedicated to realization of a sustainable culture of peace at Canada's largest university.  From 2002-06, he served as co-organizer of the event.

Today, Guru Fatha Singh provides a healing touch and an inspiring vision in his many classes and workshops.  Using the teachings of Kundalini Yoga combined with his own unique understanding, he offers insight and mastery in the realms of life, health and self-awareness.  At once earthy and practical, timeless and globally concerned, Guru Fatha Singh is an empowering teacher committed to a new holistic consciousness in his students, in his culture and everywhere.

Outside of his classes and workshops, Guru Fatha Singh shares his knowledge and inspiration through books, poems and articles.  The biography of Yogi Bhajan, which his teacher commissioned him to write in 1983, is posted, chapter by chapter, on his blog each month.  That project is still in the process of being added to and written, month by month - and may be read on the blog on this site.
